Lately I’ve been running back School House Rocks Music Videos on Youtube. I never really watched School House Rocks as a kid. That’s probably why I am dumb. Bob Dorough and Crew crushing it. By the way, Bob Dorough otherwise known as the voice School House Rocks grew up in Texas, majored in piano arrangement, moved to NYC when it was super gnarly, worked along side Miles Davis, Allen Ginsberg, Mose Allison, Lenny Bruce, and put together a song and dance revue Sugar Ray Robinson when he temporarily left boxing! How cool is that?! I am amazed at how well they break down these topics through song. Teaching the kids to treat women right and not be racist using funky grooves. Dig it? Get your learn on.
“This blog is a collective effort by friends to make another high-falutin, self-important entry into the deluge of bobo-ass music blogs. All links provided are Mediafire because it is better than Megaupload, Rapidshare, zSHARE, and Sendspace. It would be much appreciated if you could leave thoughts, comments, and opinions on our posts. We’re not going to pretend we don’t love it. Make the effort to support any active band we post music by, either through buying their music and/or merch, or by going out to see them. If any bands or labels would like us to remove music posted, email us (do not leave comments asking us. Please email us at icoulddietomorrow@gmail.com) and we will do so immediately. Feel free to email about anything, really. We’re kinda slow at responding, but we will try our hardest to get back to you! Additionally, our album archive can be viewed here.”
Big ups to Olde homie, Nicky Savage, getting written up in the Honolulu Weekly and getting brought out to play The Academy of Art’s ArtAfterDark this Friday. Read the rest of the story HERE and download the yacht mix he did for us HERE. Yeah Nicky!
*Spring Shirts are slowly making their way toward the ‘dock’. Insert docking joke.
Chris Carter and camp doing what they do best, making Molder look like a recluse bad ass. Except this time they got a psychic child molesting ex-priest helping them uncover a missing FBI Agent. Lots of snow, work getting in the way of Fox and Scully’s candle lit love making, etc. Just like the tv series, but with a budget for Amanda Pete’s bland acting. X-files, perfect when you are in the mood for X-files. You know what I mean.
I was excited when I saw this one available. For no reason man, I just got excited. It’s hard to muster up that kind of enthusiasm now a days so I just went with it. Robert D can act, he is his character in every movie. I liked how they poked at that in Tropic Thunder, dude is mad legit to the core. The Soloist is a touching look at homelessness in Los Angeles. Sad part is if the dude didn’t play concert cello nobody would care. Streets is real man. Don’t take nothing for granted. Jamie Fox was pretty good. The only thing that bothered me was Jamie’s wardrobe. They put glitter, mesh, halloween shit, hawaii shirts, leis, and make up on this dude. C’mon I know he is a craze musician, but he ain’t trying out for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Tame it down.
My unofficial reintroduction into the NW, Flying Coffin Jason and a few ol’ friends, chicken wings from Pok Pok (Yelp! that), and the From Ashes Rise Reunion. Unexpected indeed. Chicken and metal brah. *thumbs up* Ludacris should one up Lil’ Wayne, and make that his next album, ‘Chicken and Metal’. Jason and Kai drove 3 hours from Seattle to purchase records (sales tax free), eat chicken wings, see some music, and then drive 3 hours back at 1:00 am. I am sure, blasting metal the whole way. The good times.
I’d never heard From Ashes Rise before. To be honest I heard the name, but kind of wrote them off. I knew they were on Jade Tree back in the day and had a few members from Tragedy. That should have been a sign. Jason guys played me a few tracks in the car and sold me on it. $10 cover at the Satyricon, can’t beat that. Total mind trip. This Hawaii kid I used to know was in the opening act, Burning Leather. They turned out tightly knit Motorhead-Style punk rock tunes. Homeboy shredded the guitar, and grew a foot since I last seen him. Good job Scotty!
Then on to the headliners (that’s a good name for a band, The Headliners), From Ashes Rise turned out to be the perfect d-beat/thrash band that I have been searching for all these years. Needless to say, “I blew it”. 1997-2005 I was blowing it. Great songs, heavy, catchy, incredible lyrics, killer stage presence, minimal talking in between songs, just ripping. Funny how you stumble upon music that way. I don’t remember the last time I saw a band unbeknownst to me, where I was pumped on every song. I don’t even know if that has ever happened before. The show went by quick. Reunions can be sketchy especially in the punk rock world, but the dudes crushed it.
I don’t actively search out bands anymore. I kind of wait for a friend to suggest something, then check it out. Stumbling upon things or being given things seems to work better for me. Once in a while I hit the jackpot, and this was definitely one of those times. From what I understand this was there only US reunion, so if you want to catch them one last time you’ll have to fly to either Quebec or Germany. Either way if your a d-beat fan try and listen to a few songs, and if your feeling it pick up the records. Eat some good chicken too. Spring is coming, get happy!
Caught Past Lives at the Doug Fir this past week. They are headed out on a full U.S. tour in support of their new album Tapestry of Webs. I haven’t been paying that much attention to the Blood Brothers or their side projects in the last 7 years, but randomly got asked to review the record and was surprisingly impressed. It has that signature NW spastic-low-groove-punk-jangle that I’ve missed over the years. I must say that the drummer is one of my favorite. You can listen to the entire record here. Skip around, there are some good jams on there.
