What’s Really Going On… pt. 2

These films were counter culture to the clean and wholesome projection of professional surfing at the time. It brought that skate vibe to the water, and for a generation of surfers, it was our Whiskey Vids.

Our buddy CJ flew in from NYC last August for a friend’s wedding. Here are a few snap shots of a lazy Sunday afternoon session at Stadium Park. Prior to this trip CJ went on a 8-day bike tour of Japan and will have a spread documenting his adventures in the new issue of Contrast. Shoooots.

What’s Really Going On…

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

It was the mid-nineties and surf films were either very arty soulful or performance-focused showing clean-cut professional athletes. At the time I found myself attracted to neither, couldn’t understand the arty undertones and wasn’t focused on being a professional ripper. I had come from a skateboarding background and loved the vibe of skate videos back then. Then along came the …lost videos of “What’s Really Goin’ On” and “What’s Really Goin’ Wrong”, two groundbreaking films in surfing. They featured a team that surfed fast and lived faster. They partied hard, had hilarious outtakes and ripped as hard and explosive as the top pros, if not better. My surf crew back in high school associated with this and would screen them at each other’s houses, to our parents disappointment. The films exposed us to punk music we never heard before and was influential on our music development.
