Olde Living

1) Adrian Tomine’s Optic Nerve - I don’t know how I got into these, but I did, and they are great. Not only a big fan of his illustration, but his ability to conjure such emotion in such a short span is highly impressive. Taking money from the New Yorker. I suck at drawing, but this dude makes me wanna draw.

2) Wahiawa Botanical Gardens - Both the Chief and I went to private grade schools up Wahiawa Heights. I remember it being much faster to walk down the heights to catch the Circle Island, than to wait for the Heights Bus and transfer. If you know Wahiawa you know it rains there, and while that can put a damper on your session it makes for some of the most lush greenery in the state. Back in the day it was pretty overgrown. Middles schoolers would go there and vandalize and make out, usual things that middle schoolers do. I once saw two kids brawl on the bridge. I watched from the side it was some mortal kombat-like shit. They were into too cause they were both busting kicks and I am pretty sure neither of them had ever had a karate lesson in their lives. The Botanical Garden is a magical place filled with an array of bamboo gardens and majestic trees. It’s some straight up Princess Mononoke type shit and one of my favorite places in the world to chill. Stop by on your next visit to North Shore.

3) Hybrid Buses - A few months ago my truck broke down, and my reluctance (and lack of $$) forced me to take to catch the bus to and from work. At first waking up an hour earlier was a chore, but I began to really enjoy the morning stroll to the bus stop at dawn; not to mention the pleasant air conditioned bus ride, the reduction of my carbon footprint, the time i have to myself to let the Olde Ivory juices flow, and the money saved on gas, car insurance, and parking. I’m now kind of infatuated with public transit. I eventually got a new/used car, but I still take the bus to work.

4) Buzzy Trent - Style Legend.

5) Rick Froberg’s Illustration - By now you all probably have a pretty good idea of what we like.

Olde Living

1) Joltin’ Joe’s Swagger - Undeniable.

2) Milkshakes - If your bummed, get unbummed. What’s a few million calories? Why do you think kids are stoked all the time?

3) Hammocks - These things are good for your mind. The fact that you need two trees makes it even more lounge. If any of your friends ask you why you live in Hawaii don’t even answer them.

4) Ripley’s Believe It or Not - As you get older new sensations are few and far between. That is why adults do craze shit like base jumping. When you are a kid everything is new. I remember looking at a Ripley’s Believe it or Not comic for the first time when I was 7 or so. My neighbors grandfather had a stack from the 1950s and I distinctly remember being both afraid and intrigued at the same time.

5) Kelly Link’s Stranger Things Happen - A few years ago while living in Seattle a friend of mine turned me onto Dave Eggar’s Mcsweeneys, an independent press that published a quarterly book of short stories by rejected authors. He shared with me his favorite stories by an author by the name of Kelly Link. He also mentioned that she had a book called Stranger Things Happen that was just as good. He was right. I don’t read much fiction, but this is my jam.
