Top 15 John Candy Movies

Monday, November 30th, 2009

This is list is almost spot on aside from Cool Runnings being so high up. Also Spaceballs would have been #2 for me. Though Blues Brothers is not really a “John Candy” movie I would definitelly throw that in the top 5. I know its preference, but Great Outdoors is my #1. There is not one bad second in that movie. Happy Monday. Hope you did your part in stimulating the economy this weekend with all the Black Friday Madness. I know I did.

Also had a revelation. I’ve been skating an 8″ Alex Olson deck with Indy 149s and though its smooth I have been having trouble flipping it the way I want. I stepped onto my friend’s board which is for the most part identical, but a 7 7/8″ Marc Johnson with 129s. Damn what a difference. It’s like I’ve been training with ankle weights. Size does matter, but in this case smaller takes the cake.

Yatch Traffic Mixtape by Fiero

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

As small as we are we have had the good fortune of having two of our favorite DJs do rad mixtapes for us (Thanks for the Full Metal Racket Tape Kid A.non!) This holiday season our man Nicky Savage came through with a lucid maritime inspired Ghost in the Shell type mix and I have to say, no bias, its one of the sickest tapes I’ve ever heard. It’s that kind of party. Please feel free to download courtesy of Fiero and share with your shipmates and deckhands. Fiero x OI give you head’ bebe. Happy Turkey!

Olde Living

1) Okie Noodling - “Noodling is a young man’s game”.

2) American Movie - When a buddy of mine went away to college in Seattle he got exposed to all these great independent flicks that I would have other wise never heard of. American Movie is one of the most charming movies that I have ever seen and to this day I can watch it and still crack up laughing. Follow your dreams all the way down.

3) Traffic Skateboards - Philly Legend Ricky Oyola’s company. I admire and respect everything this company stands for. I buy a lot of skate dvds and read all the mags. You can add up tricks and count stairs, but at the end of the day comes down to style and preference. I love, I repeat, love East Coast street skating. Everything about it. Growing up watching all Dan Wolfe’s old vids, it was like hearing Minor Threat for the first. I identified with it emotionally; it also seemed tangible. Board control, style, environment, in the moment. So fresh. I support these guys, in fact after watching it online hundreds of time I finally broke down and bought both dvds. New boards are looking sick too. Oh yeah, and Bob Puleo and Hank Panza are on the team. win.

4) Winona in JSBX’s ‘Talk about the Blues’ - 8 billion points. See any other familiar people in this video? They are also down with Chuck D and backed R.L. Burnside on Ass Pocket of Whiskey and Mr. Wizard.

5) Mark Twain’s Mysterious Stranger - I can’t believe this was a kid’s movie. It is almost like it promotes taking acid.

The Mysterious Stranger is an unfinished work and the last novel attempted by the American author Mark Twain. It was worked on periodically from roughly 1890 up until his death in 1910. The body of work is a serious social commentary by Twain addressing his ideas of the Moral Sense and the “damned human race”. A “complete” version was published posthumously in 1916 by Twain’s biographer Albert Bigelow Paine under the name The Mysterious Stranger, A Romance, but this version is under scrutiny concerning the extent of editing performed on Twain’s manuscripts by Paine. The published version is a novella.
