$1 DVD Machine: Labor Pains, Funny People, It Might Get Loud
February 5th, 2010Well, in the life news department I’ve relocated to the Pacific North West; Portland, OR to be exact. (Wow, that is the most blog sounding blog intro ever) So now 50% of the ‘Ivory’ is living in the land of gray skies, neck beards, and some of the best microbreweries on the planet. I’m finishing up my last year of school aka avoiding that stuff people keep talking about, ‘reality’ I think they call it. But fret not, through the miracle of the internet we will still be churning out quality tees and ranting about how everything sucks now. Since apparently it rains a lot in these parts I have had ample time to catch up on my DVD watching. First up was the LiLo curveball Labor Pains. I’ve been putting this one off for a long time now. I’ve even passed it up to rewatch some movies, but now felt like the right time. This movie blew in many ways and I won’t waste time point them out, but the acting, directing, story, plot, director of photography, casting director, music, writing, was weeeeak. Of course, those things don’t necessarily make or break a movie, here me out. But in this case… THEY DID. The movie essentially has 2 jokes, one from Tracee Ellis Ross (who starred in that WB show a Girlfriends), LiLo’s pregnant coworker who in the midst of a break down says, “I just need a drink *whimper* or some weed!”. And the other one is from Janeane Garofalo, who plays a talk show hosts who says in the middle of an interview, “Yes… Yes.. Yes, I do think that having a clean colon IS everything.” That’s what’s great about the $1 DVD Machine. No regrets, movie sucks, hey, what do you want man it’s a $1.

Slept on this movie because most people labeled it as average. Serves me right for trusting anyone other than my own bitter jaded self. Hahah, kidding. I’m not that serious. Funny People was wonderful. LiLo, straight up, fire your agent dude. Labor Pains was a bad choice. I’d watch Funny People again. I enjoyed it very much. Good reviews tend to be a lot shorter.
For anyone who likes rock and roll music, especially rock documentary. When I first heard about the movie I thought The Edge and Jack White should not even be let in the same room as Jimmy Page and I still adamantly feel that way, but the doc was great none the less. I do respect The Edge and Jack White, and apparently they wanted to get a prolific guitarist from each generation. I was wondering who else my generation could get beside Jack White, slim pickings round hea. Jack White did fine, and is always interesting to watch. The movie furthered the Page legacy. Dude is just so cool. There are parts where James Page jams along with some U2 and Stripes’ riffs. It’s laughable, but Page really digs in and tries to unearth the soul of the riff. He is the master, there is no other. I suppose you could do a movie with Jimmy Page, Pete Townsend, Keith Richards, Clapton, BB, Toots, and Buddy, but I get that they wanted the whole variety and generational thing. I wonder what it would have been like to throw Frusciante into the mix? Anyway, Jack White is a very expressive singer/songmaker and his ability to succumb to the elements and execute what is in his head is impressive. I forgot how good ‘Icky Thump’ was live. Hot damn! The White Stripes were a phenom, and they definitely have written some of the better songs in the past 10 years with a bucket and tin can. The Edge, its hard to take that dude seriously, but you can’t deny U2 in the 80s. He is a sound/texture architect and commands his music. He did give a nod to The Jam’s first performance on Top of the Pops noting that it set the course for U2’s attitude and experimentation. My favorite scene in the movie is where the three guitarist are sitting down talking and Jimmy breaks into the riff from ‘Whole Lotta Love’. It’s mind blowing. The Edge and White’s jaws drop. They are quickly reminded, “oh yeah, we suck”. Another notable scene is Jimmy listening to Link Wray’s ‘The Rumble’ in his private music library. It’s super cool watching Jimmy genuinely rocking out. James Page, best there ever was.
